Now Available: YMC-Triart Bio C18 Wide Pore Hybrid C18 Designed for Use with Proteins, Peptides, Oligonucleotides

Conventional C18 stationary phases are often not ideal for reversed phase separation of larger molecules such as proteins, large peptides, and oligos. This is because the pore size on the surface of the stationary phase particles is too small – typically, 80-150 Å.

YMC-Triart Bio C18 is specifically designed for application with biomolecules. The wide 300 Å pore size makes YMC-Triart Bio C18 well-suited for separating large molecules in the 10-100kDa range.

In order for stationary phases to do their job, the analytes must completely and reproducibly interact with the entirety of the stationary phase surface. Large molecules fail to interact in this way when the pore size is too small. Depending on the orientation of the molecules themselves, some may not interact at all, while others interact with varying degrees of completeness. This occurs literally millions of times through the length of the column. The result of this variable exclusion is peak broadening and poor reproducibility.

The wide 300 Å pore size of YMC-Triart Bio C18 enables improved large molecule interaction with the surface chemistry of the stationary phase. Peak shape is improved; closely resolved sample components can be better separated; quantitative results are more reproducible – overall performance is enhanced.

YMC-Triart Bio C18 offers the same advantages common to all phases in the YMC-Triart hybrid family: long column life, mechanical strength (tolerates high pressure), temperature durability (compared to conventional silica-based C18 phases), and chemical stability (suitable for use at pH 1-12).

YMC-Triart Bio C18 exhibits hydrophobicity somewhat lower than conventional C18, so, YMC-Triart Bio C18 provides fast elution times when used to analyze highly hydrophobic small molecules. A companion phase, YMC-Triart Bio C4, has the same wide pore design, but a shorter alkyl chain, also resulting in lower hydrophobicity, and providing biochromatographers an option for reversed phase separations.

History shows that uptake of innovation is metered in the biopharma industry, but if the invention has checked all the “user need” boxes, its acceptance has an inflection point. This inflection point, when graphed, resembles a hockey stick (hopefully pointing
